KIDSIGHT (Eye screening)

Date: Oct. 22 to Oct 29, 2012

Location:  Managua, Nicaragua

Event:  Nicaragua Missions and Outreach Foundation, Inc will partner with the LIONS CLUBS of Nicaragua to screen children between the age of 1 year old and 6 years old for Amblyopia.  The vision screening is a short test that produces images of a child's eyes to help find out if he or she has any eye problems, such as being far-sighted or near-sighted, or having blurry, hazy, or unclear vision, misaligned eyes, or unequal focusing power.  This screening is about 85-90% effective in finding problems that can cause poor vision.
Amblyopia is commonly known as "lazy eye".  It comes from the Greek words amblyos, which means dull, and opia, which means vision.  Typically amblyopia occurs in one eye, and left untreated, can cause dull vision, uncorrectable with glasses, to the point of blindness for people under age 49.  While this might be surprising, it is not hopeless.  Amblyopia is treatable if detected early.
